Ian Cogswell

Senior Advisor

Ian has almost 25 years’ experience in Project Finance, specialising in the natural resources sector since 2002. His experience covers both lending and financial advisory for clients including the major Integrated Oil Companies; National Oil Companies; independent developers; investment funds; and Export Credit Agencies.

Having started his career at Lloyds Bank, Ian subsequently moved to the Industrial Bank of Japan / Mizuho before spending 12 years as Managing Director and Global Head of Natural Resources Project Finance at Natixis.  Latterly, he was the Head of Project Finance at ICBC London Branch.

During his career, Ian has undertaken a number of high profile financial advisory mandates, including:

  • The financing feasibility Study for the Qatar Gas to Liquids Project (Oryx GTL), a landmark Project developed by Qatar Petroleum and Sasol to convert Qatar’s natural gas reserves into low-sulphur environmentally friendly diesel, naphtha and LPG;
  • Advising Abu Dhabi state-owned Senaat (formerly GHC) on a US$1.1bn financing for the Emirates Steel Expansion Project;
  • Advising the joint venture of Sinopec and Concord Energy on the US$252m financing for the construction of the Fujairah Oil Terminal;
  • Working with First Reserve and Petrofac on the innovative US$U225m cross-collateralized financing of their joint venture’s acquisition of an FPSO deployed in the Gulf of Thailand and a MOPU deployed offshore Malaysia; and
  • Currently providing technical assistance to the government of Vietnam in developing its LNG import regulations; gas market and LNG strategies and advice on LNG Project Financing and contracting best practices, pursuant to its eighth Power Development Plan.

Since 2008, Ian has been a visiting lecturer in Oil & Gas Project Finance for both the Master of Engineering – Economics & Management; and the Masters in Project Finance at the École des Ponts ParisTech and the University of Paris at Nanterre.  He continues to provide both public and in-house Project Finance training programmes, specialising in the oil & gas and energy sectors.

Ian holds a BA (Hons) in Economics and an MSc in Civil Engineering, both from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers; as an Associate of the Association of Corporate Treasurers; and has graduated from the Financial Times Non-Executive Director Diploma.
