Senior Advisor

Richard has over 25 years’ experience in Project Finance, working as a financial advisor, arranger, equity investor, fund manager and project director on transactions around the globe. Richard has worked extensively on Energy, Infrastructure, Renewables and Sports Stadia transactions, working with public and private sector entities, DFI’s, ECA’s and Multilateral Agencies.

Prior to joining Portland, Richard led Project Capital Limited, a boutique Project Finance advisory practice for over a decade. Prior to this Richard was Chief Executive Officer of ING’s European Infrastructure Fund, head of WestLB’s London Infrastructure team and started his career at Barclays Capital as a financial advisor on European Infrastructure projects.

During his career, Richard has successfully executed in excess of $30bn of transactions, including numerous landmark projects that have won industry awards. His roles include mandates where sponsors require leadership to navigate complex transactions to Financial Close or financial restructuring in a distressed scenario.

A selection of notable transactions include:

  • Advising the sponsors as Project Director on the $900m Azura Power Project, a landmark transaction for Nigeria being the first Independent Power Project (IPP) to be financed by a consortium of DFI’s and International Banks;
  • Advising the sponsors as Project Director on the £2bn Thameslink Rolling Stock Project (European Deal of the Year – Project Finance International and Project Finance Magazine);
  • Advising the World Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria as the lead external financial consultant for the Nigerian Power Sector Recovery Plan;
  • Leading the rescue restructuring of Wembley Stadium during the construction phase of the £800m project on behalf of the holders of Senior Debt;
  • Equity investor in the Q7 Offshore Windfarm, the first ever non-recourse financing of an offshore wind transaction; and
  • Acting as sole arranger on the £1bn acquisition of Laing Plc.

Richard holds a BSocSc (Hons) in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham. He qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIOB) and has Investment Management qualifications with the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA).
